Decarb’ing Medical Cannabis without Smoke

The THC and CBD concentrations that the producers quote on their labels are actually potential values; we can only realize these values once we decarboxylate (decarb) or activate the raw bud. This process decarbs the bud in the oven to produce a ready-to-eat dry herb.

We tried a few batches to find the optimal roasting of canna-caps for our purposes. Your equipment may differ. Roasting too long turns THC to CBN, which will likely make you sleepy.

  1. Measure out the amount of MMJ required. For consistent doses, start with the following basic formula:

(Tg + Cg) / (T% + C%) * Q = Bg

Where: Tg = THC per dose

Cg = CBD per dose
T% = THC rate
C% = CBD rate
Q = doses per batch
Bg = dried bud per batch

  1. Use a grinder to break the bud apart to increase surface area. It doesn’t need to be as fine as for a joint but shouldn’t have any big lumps. We recommend an electric (coffee) grinder for large quantities.
  2. Place the ground bud in a pan and cover over with foil or wrap it in a foil packet. If you don’t have a non-stick pan, spray it with cooking oil. Pinch the edges together to keep all vapours inside the pan.
  3. Roast 30-32 minutes at 250 F.
  4. Remove from heat; do NOT open foil for at least one hour. We have left it for 20+ hours with little difference noted, although after a week it did seem like it had lost something.
  5. Grind the roasted bud with any seasoning to produce a fine powder. You can cook with this like any other herbs, add it to baking, or use it in canna-caps (recipe coming soon).
